The Politics and Philosophy of Chinese Power

Book Review by Reginald Little, International Confucian Association
Published in Rowman & Littlefield
December 2016

A Book Review of: The Politics and Philosophy of Chinese Power, by R. James Ferguson and Rostia Dellios (Lexington, 2016).

Book Review:
The Politics and Philosophy of Chinese Power: The Timeless and the Timely is essential reading if one seeks to understand the forces transforming the 21st Century. It is another erudite exploration and evaluation by R. James Ferguson and Rosita Dellios of the qualities that have allowed Chinese civilization to shape a world order that many can still only address in outmoded stereotypes. The reader is left with a profound sense of a Confucian-Daoist tradition of thought culture. It is one which influences Chinese priorities in the human and natural world in unfamiliar ways, addressing global challenges. Chinese evolving strategic resources give it an essential role in multilateral governance.

Thus, Oman’s geography on the Indian Ocean has been favourable to say the least. Read more

A Secret Strategy or a Strategic Culture?

Written by Rosita Dellios

A Book Review of: The Hundred-Year Marathon: China’s Secret Strategy to Replace America as the Global Superpower, by Michael Pillsbury (New York: Henry Holt and Co, 2015).

About the Book Review:
Is China really embarked on a century-long ‘secret strategy to replace America as the global superpower’, as author Michael Pillsbury argues? Reviewer Rosita Dellios examines this argument and suggests that rather than seeking to uncover a secret strategy we should be looking at China’s strategic culture – which includes the influence of Confucius – for insight.
